Writing Prompt #1: Trust the Universe
September's writing prompt might involve a pair of scissors and an openness to discovery.
If you'd like to skip the preamble and get straight to writing, scroll down to the image that says "Trust the Universe."
If you want to hear where this prompt came from and how I use prompts in my own writing practice, stay with me a while.
I'm posting this on September 1 for all of you signed up for a Writer Membership. (Thank you!!)
Fellow writers, here's your task: Sometime during the month, try this prompt and see what it brings you. It might help to do what I do to take the pressure off: Come to the prompt with a project already in mind—a novel you're in the midst of drafting, a new novel idea you're tentatively exploring, a short story you've started, whatever it may be and whatever form, genre, or audience speaks to you... simply something you've begun that has room to grow.
I believe that there's no wrong way to respond to a writing prompt. This is what I've discovered in my own practice: The answers and ideas are in my subconscious, and sometimes I need a little outside nudge to lift them up.
This prompt is one that can help when you're stuck inside a story, unsure of where to take it next. This is a prompt that makes something happen, plot-wise, and it's up to you to personalize it, shape it, and see it through.
